AI visibility becomes a critical new metric for brand competition
Marketing and business professionals are increasingly focusing on AI visibility as generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity reshape how consumers discover brands. Unlike traditional search engines that provide lists of links, AI models often provide direct, authoritative answers that can include or exclude specific brands from a buyer's consideration set.
Research indicates a growing gap between traditional market share and what is being termed “share of answer.” A study of 150 software companies revealed that 44% of brands ranking in Google’s top 10 received zero citations from ChatGPT for the same terms. This suggests that authority in AI models is driven by different signals than traditional SEO, such as how often independent sources mention a brand and the clarity of its digital structure.
A survey of U.S.-based marketing and communications professionals found that 47% view AI visibility as highly or significantly important. While business leaders are actively inquiring about these metrics, many marketers are still navigating how to influence them, with some incorrectly leaning on paid media and marketing operations to drive results in a landscape that requires different strategic approaches.
