AI Search visibility differs from traditional search indexing
Digital marketing strategies are shifting as the distinction between brand mentions and citations in AI search becomes critical. Data indicates that ChatGPT mentions brands approximately three times more often than it cites them as sources. According to the Semrush AI Visibility Index, the overlap between mentioned brands and cited domains can be as low as 30% on platforms like Gemini, meaning a brand can be frequently named without its website being used as a source.
Furthermore, visibility in traditional search engines like Google does not guarantee presence in AI responses. This discrepancy is partly due to security measures; while sites may explicitly allow Google to index them, AI crawlers often trigger website security layers designed to block automated traffic. Additionally, Cloudflare has implemented measures to implicitly block major AI crawlers for new domains and is extending these blocks to agent and training crawlers on ad-monetized pages.
