Indonesian Parliament pushes AI diagnostic tool for doctor‑short regions

Deputy Chair of the DPR's Commission IX, Nihayatul Wafiroh, has proposed using artificial intelligence to help analyse diseases in Indonesian districts lacking sufficient medical staff. The suggestion, presented during a working session with the Ministry of Health on 25 June 2026, aims to give patients a preliminary assessment when doctors are unavailable.

Health Minister Budi Gunawan responded that AI could serve as a temporary bridge for specific conditions but would not replace the need for qualified physicians. The ministry plans to explore feasible AI applications while acknowledging the limitations of such technology in providing comprehensive care.
