AI shifts employer focus toward adaptability and critical thinking

Human resources and talent development leaders report that the rise of artificial intelligence is shifting employer priorities toward durable, soft skills rather than specific technical expertise. Because technology evolves rapidly, experts at a recent New York conference emphasized that curiosity, adaptability, and critical thinking are becoming essential for professional success.

Daniel Chait, CEO of the Greenhouse hiring platform, noted that employers increasingly value the ability to learn and adapt over knowledge of individual tools. Lorraine Stomsky, talent director at Walmart, highlighted that continuous learning is a key virtue, while Ginny Carlir of EY described learning as a ‘meta-skill’ that enables the acquisition of all other knowledge.

Furthermore, expectations for entry-level employees are rising. As AI automates tasks traditionally assigned to beginners, new hires are expected to demonstrate higher levels of judgment and the ability to evaluate the quality of AI-generated outputs and data inputs.
