AI microdramas transform entertainment industry through rapid production

The rapid rise of AI-generated microdramas is transforming the global entertainment landscape, particularly in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. In China, the microdrama market has reached massive proportions, with some estimates suggesting the industry could exceed 100 billion yuan. AI technology is driving this growth by drastically reducing production costs—by as much as 70% to 90%—and shortening production cycles from months to just a few days. This efficiency allows for a massive volume of content, with some reports indicating that over 95% of microdramas released in early 2026 were entirely AI-generated.

However, this technological boom has raised significant social and regulatory concerns. In Vietnam and Indonesia, users report becoming addicted to the fast-paced, high-conflict narratives, often staying up late to watch episodes that use cliffhangers to drive micro-transactions. This has led to discussions regarding the psychological impact on younger audiences and the potential for sleep deprivation and loss of focus.

Regulators are also stepping in. Chinese authorities have taken action against thousands of violating short films to curb content that promotes unrealistic lifestyles or excessive materialism. Meanwhile, the industry faces questions regarding copyright, the displacement of human actors and writers, and the long-term sustainability of a market built on high-frequency, low-cost AI content.
