AI short films spark psychological concerns in Vietnam

The rise of AI-generated short films on social media platforms is raising significant psychological and social concerns across different age groups in Vietnam. These videos, typically lasting only one to two minutes, utilize high-speed pacing, dramatic conflicts, and sophisticated algorithms to create addictive viewing experiences.

For the elderly, these films often focus on themes such as property disputes, family conflicts, and ancestral grievances. Psychiatrists warn that the rapid-fire storytelling and constant content delivery can lead to sedentary behavior and psychological manipulation, as seniors may spend hours watching consecutive episodes without realizing the time elapsed.

Among younger audiences, experts like Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Nam from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, warn of distorted values. The content often portrays unrealistic scenarios, such as sudden wealth through luck or mysterious systems, which can foster unrealistic expectations and a passive lifestyle. This immersion in virtual worlds may lead to social withdrawal and a lack of real-world skill development.
