AI strategy gap limits value as skill shortages persist

As AI adoption expands, many job seekers and workers lack confidence in responsibly using AI tools. Training programmes have raised self‑rated confidence from an average of 2.5 to 8.0, and 97% of participants say the training improved their job search. A McKinsey report notes that demand for AI fluency has risen nearly sevenfold between 2023 and 2025, while the National Cyber Security Centre warns about hallucinations, bias and the rise of “shadow AI” – the unsanctioned use of AI tools.

MIT research shows that 95% of corporate AI initiatives fail to scale beyond pilots, and only 29% of organisations report moderate progress. This disparity is described as the AI strategy gap, the disconnect between deploying AI technologies and transforming organisations to realise value. Closing the gap requires a holistic AI strategy that aligns vision, content foundations, workflows, governance, leadership and people – the six elements identified for successful AI transformation.
