AI system assists surgeons in successful brain tumor removal
Surgeons at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London have successfully removed a brain tumor using a real-time artificial intelligence system. The patient, 48-year-old Rhys Hibbert, underwent the procedure to treat an 11mm benign tumor located in the pituitary gland.
The tumor was situated near critical anatomical structures, including the carotid arteries and optic nerves. As the mass pressed against these nerves, Hibbert experienced significant peripheral vision loss, fatigue, and mobility issues.
Developed by the UCL Hawkes Institute, the AI system analyzes live video footage during surgery to color-code and identify vital nerves and blood vessels. This real-time guidance helps the surgical team navigate densely packed regions of the brain, reducing the risks of permanent blindness or death associated with misplaced incisions. Hibbert was the first patient to undergo this specific AI-assisted procedure.
