AI technology advances pregnancy and fertility care in India
Researchers in India are advancing the use of artificial intelligence to improve maternal and reproductive healthcare. IIT-Madras is developing an India-specific AI model, Garbhini-GA2, designed to estimate foetal age from ultrasound scans. This tool aims to replace Western-based formulae that may not accurately reflect Indian pregnancy data. The technology has undergone external validation at Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore and is expected to be ready for wider deployment by 2027-28.
In the field of fertility, AI is also being explored to enhance egg freezing and IVF success rates. Algorithms are being studied to analyze the microscopic appearance of eggs to assess their reproductive potential. This could help specialists determine if stored eggs are likely to result in successful pregnancies after thawing, providing women with more personalized insights into their future fertility options.
