AI technology detects heart disease from EKG scans in seconds

Researchers from Imperial College London have developed an artificial intelligence tool capable of detecting signs of heart failure and valve disease from standard EKG scans in less than two seconds. The technology, which was presented at the ESC Congress in Munich, was trained on data from millions of patients.

In a study involving 67,000 patients in the United States, the AI successfully identified up to 81% of heart failure cases and 90% of heart valve disease cases. This capability is significant because traditional EKGs are often used only to monitor heart rhythm and cannot definitively diagnose these conditions without more expensive and time-consuming echocardiograms.

Beyond EKGs, researchers noted that AI algorithms can also identify cardiovascular risks through X-rays, mammograms, and even facial images. The goal of this technology is to assist physicians in identifying high-risk patients earlier, potentially accelerating their access to necessary treatments and specialized imaging.
