AI technology enables sophisticated voice cloning and session hijacking scams
Artificial intelligence is significantly lowering the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, enabling more sophisticated and convincing fraud. Security researchers at ESET warn that AI tools can now automate the collection of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), allowing attackers to rapidly map out a victim's social connections, interests, and public data to create highly targeted campaigns.
One prominent method involves AI voice cloning, where criminals imitate the voices of family members to create sense of urgency during fake emergencies, such as accidents or arrests. The FBI has issued warnings that these cloned voices can sound nearly identical to real individuals, making traditional voice recognition an unreliable method of verification.
Additionally, infostealer malware has been used to hijack active sessions of the AI platform Claude. By stealing cookies and session tokens, attackers have been able to bypass two-factor authentication to access user accounts and consume credits without authorization. Anthropic has responded by disconnecting compromised sessions and removing saved payment methods for affected users.
