AI technology enables sophisticated property and rental scams
Artificial intelligence is enhancing the sophistication of real estate and rental scams in Australia and the United States. In Australia, the National Anti-Scam Centre reported $166.8 million in losses to payment redirection scams in 2025, a 9.3 per cent increase from the previous year. Criminals are using AI to create highly convincing, personalized messages, cloned voices, and fake documents to impersonate agents or solicitors during property settlements.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre warned that professional spelling and grammar are no longer reliable indicators of legitimacy. Similarly, in the United States, scammers are utilizing AI to generate entirely fictional rental listings, including fake addresses and AI-generated images of properties that appear to match local architectural styles. These tools allow fraudsters to create deceptive digital identities and convincing property advertisements in seconds, making it increasingly difficult for buyers and renters to distinguish between genuine opportunities and fraudulent schemes.
