AI technology enters live surgical environments in UK trials

Artificial intelligence is being integrated into live surgical environments through new clinical trials and large-scale deployments in the United Kingdom.

University College London (UCL) and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) have successfully performed the first surgery in an ongoing clinical trial using an AI system to analyze live endoscopic video. During the procedure at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, the system highlighted critical skull-base anatomy in real time to assist a neurosurgeon in removing a brain tumor while preserving the patient's vision. The system was trained on hundreds of annotated videos to recognize anatomical patterns and surgical activity.

In a separate large-scale initiative, Proximie has launched a year-long evaluation program in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Deloitte, and eight NHS hospitals. This program will deploy Proximie’s Intelligence Suite across 104 operating theatres, endoscopy suites, and catheterization laboratories. The technology aims to capture and anonymize surgical and operational data to provide real-time insights, helping hospital teams identify bottlenecks and optimize workflows to treat more patients without increasing staff hours.
