AI technology maps Arctic permafrost melting in near real-time

Scientists have developed a new interactive tool that utilizes artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to monitor Arctic permafrost melting in near real-time. This technology allows researchers to rapidly identify the formation of new lakes and the disappearance of existing ones, which are key indicators of ground instability.

As permafrost thaws, the ground can subside, creating significant risks for infrastructure, including roads and buildings. The Permafrost Discovery Gateway international team has already mapped over 4 million lakes across the Arctic and approximately 70 million small thermokarst lakes in the Alaskan tundra.

Unlike traditional scientific studies that often rely on data published long after changes occur, these AI-driven maps provide timely information. This helps local communities and planners identify vulnerable areas and determine which locations are more suitable for construction.
