AI technology poses challenges to financial regulation

At the Jackson Hole gathering of central bankers and economists, discussions highlighted how artificial intelligence could impact financial stability and the effectiveness of regulation. Experts noted that AI is permeating the real economy, disrupting sectors such as finance, engineering, and human resources, while accelerating the ability of new competitors to scale against incumbents.

A primary concern is the “asymmetric understanding” between humans and AI. While AI models can understand human behavior, policymakers struggle to predict how AI agents might navigate complex rules to achieve specific goals. This unpredictability is compounded when many AI agents operate at scale, potentially gaming complex financial regulations in ways that human-centric models cannot easily anticipate.
