AI technology presents new possibilities and risks for filmmakers

The emergence of advanced artificial intelligence in cinema is presenting both opportunities and challenges for independent filmmakers. The Iranian film ‘Dreams of Violets’, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, was created entirely using AI, demonstrating a level of visual polish that can be difficult to distinguish from traditional productions.

For many independent creators, AI offers a potential solution to the immense financial and administrative hurdles of traditional filmmaking, such as the years spent seeking large grants and navigating complex documentation. While the technology could allow films to be produced on significantly smaller budgets, it also raises industry concerns regarding the potential loss of jobs for actors, cinematographers, and other creative professionals.
