AI technology reshapes filmmaking in Nollywood and Hollywood
The integration of artificial intelligence into the film industry is presenting both opportunities and challenges for global cinematic hubs like Nollywood and Hollywood. In Nigeria, industry stakeholders are exploring how AI can democratize production by providing access to visual effects, animation, and sound design that previously required significant financial investment. However, concerns persist regarding the preservation of cultural identity. Obinna Okerekeocha, founder of the Naija AI Film Festival, emphasizes that while AI can expand creativity, it cannot replicate the specific human experiences, local languages, and cultural nuances that define Nigerian storytelling.
In Los Angeles, discussions at the ‘AI MODELS X HOLLYWOOD FILMMAKING’ event highlighted a similar paradox: while AI lowers the barriers to content production, it does not inherently improve creative quality. Participants compared AI to the invention of the pencil, noting that while it makes realization easier, it does not automatically turn a user into a skilled director or writer. The technology is redefining the content industry by making high-budget concepts more achievable while shifting the focus toward the scarcity of meaningful human expression.
