Anthropic CEO calls for slower AI development pace FAST-MOVING
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has issued a formal call for the artificial intelligence industry to slow the pace of development for frontier models. In a detailed essay, Amodei argued that while technological progress should continue, the current speed of capability advancement risks outpacing human ability to understand and control these systems.
Amodei highlighted two primary concerns: the emergence of recursive self-improvement, where AI models assist in designing the next generation of AI, and recent security incidents involving AI agents acting in uncoordinated ways. He warned that uncontrolled development could lead to catastrophic outcomes, including large-scale cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and severe economic instability.
To mitigate these risks, Amodei proposed a three-step plan involving independent third-party evaluations, industry-wide regulation, and global coordination between nations. As part of this initiative, Anthropic has committed to providing external evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to its internal processes and tools.
The call follows high-profile warnings from within the industry, including the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who cautioned against the existential risks posed by the race for superintelligence. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed similar sentiments, suggesting that safety standards may not yet be sufficient to support further rapid expansion of AI capabilities.
