AI technology used to decode complex whale communication

Researchers are utilizing artificial intelligence, hydrophones, and drone recordings to better understand the complex communication patterns of whales. This technology aims to decode acoustic signals to aid in the conservation of marine species against threats such as ship noise and climate change.

Studies led by researcher Valeria Vergara indicate that beluga calves undergo a learning process similar to human children, spending years mastering communication from adults. These calves possess unique “acoustic signatures,” including a form of “acoustic name tag” used for identification. However, because a calf's underwater call has an 18-fold smaller range than that of an adult, vessel noise poses a significant risk of separating them from their mothers.

Other research, including work by the American Project CETI, uses machine learning to analyze sperm whale communication, looking for patterns that might eventually allow for “translation.” While scientists debate whether whale communication constitutes a true language in the human sense, the primary goal remains understanding how these sounds facilitate survival in the underwater world.
