AI threatens visibility of journalism, prompting shift to micro‑content formats
Digital platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts have forced newsrooms to condense reporting into micro‑content that must capture attention within seconds. The format prioritises brevity over depth, risking loss of nuance, oversimplification of complex issues and a reliance on hook‑driven presentation, even as it serves as a gateway to longer‑form work.
At the same time, generative AI tools can ingest, summarise and re‑deliver news without directing users to the original outlets. This makes the source of journalism increasingly invisible, jeopardising media revenue, undermining shared public discourse and concentrating informational power in a handful of U.S. tech companies. European regulators are beginning to address these democratic and commercial challenges.
