AI tool improves multiple sclerosis detection in MRI scans
Researchers from the University of Ostrava, the Faculty Hospital Ostrava, and VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava have demonstrated that artificial intelligence can accurately detect changes in patients with multiple sclerosis.
A study published in Scientific Reports shows that an AI tool designed to automatically identify new or enlarging lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans matched expert assessments in 91.8 percent of cases.
Neurologist Ondřej Volný noted that while the technology is not a replacement for physicians, it serves as a reliable assistant for neurologists and radiologists. The tool is particularly valuable during follow-up examinations, where it can alert doctors to minute changes by comparing current scans with previous ones, thereby improving the monitoring of disease activity.
