AI tools and brain scans boost early dementia detection
Researchers at the University of California, Davis have launched the AggieBrain initiative, an AI‑driven platform that automates the analysis of digital brain tissue scans to identify pathological hallmarks of dementia. Funded by a $420,500 gift from the Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation, the project aims to make the workflow and benchmark data freely available to scientists worldwide, accelerating precision‑medicine approaches for conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Lewy body and vascular dementia.
A separate study led by neuroscientist Nicola Sambuco of the University of Bari in Italy found that the size of the thalamus measured in a single high‑resolution brain scan predicts future cognitive decline better than tracking brain volume loss over time. Analyzing 75 participants from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the researchers showed that thalamic volume can serve as an early indicator of memory problems, potentially improving how doctors identify patients at highest risk for dementia.
