AI tools in job searching lead to increasingly generic resumes
The widespread use of artificial intelligence in job searching is creating a new challenge for candidates: the tendency for resumes to sound remarkably similar. While AI tools can polish wording and organize experience, they often produce generic, repetitive language such as being ‘results-driven’ or ‘highly motivated.’ This lack of specificity can make it difficult for recruiters to distinguish individual candidates or understand the true substance of their experience.
To stand out, experts suggest using AI to enhance rather than replace personal detail. Instead of relying on vague, polished phrases, candidates should use specific metrics and concrete examples—such as the exact number of leaders supported or specific tasks managed—to provide a clearer picture of their capabilities.
Career coach Jeff Altman notes that while AI can assist with resume optimization, interview preparation, and job matching, it is not a ‘magic job board.’ Tools like ChatGPT do not have direct access to live job boards to reveal secret listings. Successful job seekers should use AI to improve the quality of their applications through human oversight and nuanced tailoring, rather than simply increasing the quantity of generic submissions.
