Brazil implements AI and new radar technologies for public safety
Brazil is implementing various technological advancements in public infrastructure and safety. The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has authorized pilot projects to test average speed control systems across eight states, including Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina. Unlike traditional point-based radars, this system calculates speed based on the time taken to travel between two monitoring points. During this 180-day experimental phase, no fines will be issued based solely on average speed.
In São Paulo, artificial intelligence is being used to manage traffic flow, with adaptive algorithms installed at 1,677 intersections to reduce congestion. Additionally, AI-equipped cameras on the Raposo Tavares highway have already identified over 2,300 infractions related to seatbelt use and mobile phone usage within a single month.
In Goiás, the state government launched the Integrated Monitoring and Alert System (SIMA-GO), which uses AI and satellite data to detect forest fires and reduce emergency response times. Meanwhile, in Aparecida de Goiânia, the installation of 70 AI-powered surveillance cameras has led to an 80% decrease in illegal waste dumping incidents.
