AI training improves medical students' anamnesis skills

A randomized clinical trial published in the journal BMC Medical Education has evaluated the effectiveness of using artificial intelligence-based simulated patients for training medical students in anamnesis skills.

The study compared 56 students divided into two groups: one trained with AI virtual patients and another using traditional role-play methods. Results indicated superior performance in the AI group regarding clinical history collection, reasoning, communication, and professional behavior during structured clinical evaluations.

Key advantages of AI simulation include the ability for students to repeat exercises indefinitely, receive immediate feedback on decisions, and progressively adjust their approach. These features are noted as being more difficult to replicate in traditional role-play, which relies on the availability of actors or peers.
