AI transforms global film industry through content saturation and production shifts
The global film and microdrama industries are experiencing significant shifts due to the integration of artificial intelligence. In China, the microdrama sector is facing a “crisis of excess.” According to data from the China Radio and Television Administration, over 90% of the approximately 430,000 short films released online in the first eight months of the year were AI-generated. While AI has lowered production costs for fantasy and action genres, the market is suffering from content saturation and repetitive storytelling, leading some platforms to return to human-led productions to maintain quality.
In Hollywood, AI is fundamentally altering production workflows and labor markets. While U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that film and video production employment dropped from a peak of 289,000 in October 2022 to approximately 185,000 by February 2026, the direct causal link to AI is still being analyzed. However, major studios including Disney, Netflix, Amazon MGM, Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., and Sony are actively recruiting for AI-specific roles. These positions focus on integrating generative workflows into visual effects, animation, sound, and dubbing, signaling a strategic move to embed AI into repetitive production processes.
