AI usage in education prompts shift in student assessment methods

The rise of artificial intelligence in education is forcing a re-evaluation of how student competence is assessed. Reports indicate that approximately 82% of students use AI to complete graded assignments, raising concerns about whether academic degrees certify human skill or AI-generated output.

To address this, experts suggest shifting focus from the final product to the learning process. Rather than merely attempting to detect AI usage, educators recommend evaluating a student’s ability to explain, defend, and adjust their work. This includes asking students to justify their choice of evidence or rewrite passages from different perspectives to ensure they truly master the content.

Proposed solutions include establishing clear regulations for AI use, categorized into three levels: prohibited, permitted with disclosure, or mandatory. Additionally, increasing direct interaction and face-to-face assessments is suggested as a way to verify authentic knowledge, similar to approaches being considered in regions like Europe.
