AI usage linked to cognitive changes and mental health impacts

Recent research highlights the dual impact of artificial intelligence on human cognition and mental health. A study from the MIT Media Lab involving 54 adults suggests that intensive use of tools like ChatGPT for tasks such as essay writing may lead to weaker neural connectivity and a phenomenon described as ‘cognitive debt,’ where users struggle to recall information they have processed via AI.

On a psychological level, research from Stanford University involving 131 adults in the United States indicates that using chatbots for companionship can affect mental well-being. The study found that individuals with smaller social circles are more likely to use AI as a substitute for human relationships. While AI can provide immediate emotional relief and reduce loneliness for some, the development of deep emotional attachments to chatbots may have negative consequences for long-term mental health.
