AI usage trends among children and adolescents
Recent studies highlight a significant shift in how children and adolescents interact with artificial intelligence. In Finland, a survey supported by Etla and Digirova revealed that 78% of children and adolescents aged 11 to 17 use AI tools. Notably, approximately 20% of participants use AI for personal conversations they are unwilling to share with others, a figure that rises above 25% among older teenagers. About 7% of respondents reported turning to AI because they felt they had no one else to talk to.
In France, research commissioned by the German organization Interface and conducted by YouGov found a gap between youth AI usage and parental awareness. While 40% of French children aged 11 to 12 use general AI tools weekly, only 26% of their parents are aware of this. Regular use of generative AI increases with age, reaching 70% among those aged 16 to 17. Additionally, 92% of generative AI users report spending more time with the technology than they intended, and 42% of parents feel they lack the support necessary to guide their children toward responsible use.
