Blue Cross Blue Shield Association reports $942 million in AI-driven healthcare cost increases

An analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) reveals that the implementation of artificial intelligence in medical coding has contributed to nearly $942 million in additional healthcare costs for BCBS companies between 2023 and 2025.

The report indicates that more than 60% of US hospital systems now use AI-enabled technologies to scan electronic records and laboratory results to identify secondary diagnoses. These automated tools often classify patients into more complex, higher-severity medical categories, which triggers higher-reimbursement claims.

Crucially, the BCBSA noted a significant disconnect between these increased diagnoses and the actual medical care provided. For instance, while there has been a sharp rise in diagnoses such as anemia following major surgeries, there has not been a corresponding increase in necessary treatments like blood transfusions. Approximately $650 million of the total cost increase is attributed to secondary diagnoses that shifted claims into higher-reimbursement categories. This trend is expected to place increased financial pressure on insurance premiums, employers, and taxpayers.
