AI Vendors Adopt Token Consumption Pricing, Boosting Local AI PCs

AI providers charge per token, but billing also includes tokens generated during a model's internal reasoning, making the apparent cost misleading and sometimes up to ten times higher than advertised. An evaluation showed a model marketed as 30% cheaper actually cost about 14.7 times more per useful output token because hidden reasoning tokens were billed.

Vendors are shifting from per‑seat subscription models to token‑based or outcome‑based pricing for AI features, aligning costs with usage and making enterprise AI expenses less predictable. To control costs, many enterprises are turning to AI PCs equipped with local neural‑processing units that run small models on‑device, eliminating per‑query cloud charges. For high‑volume, low‑complexity tasks, these local solutions can break even within months, while cloud AI remains essential for large models and training.
