AI video production shifts between rapid creation and low-quality slop
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming video production, significantly reducing the time and cost required to create content. While these tools allow creators and businesses to produce professional-looking videos from text or images in minutes, the rise of mass-produced content has led to the emergence of “AI video slop.”
Defined by Merriam-Webster and the American Dialect Society as the 2025 word of the year, “slop” refers to low-quality digital content produced in large quantities by AI. This type of content is characterized by superficial competence, asymmetric effort where the producer offloads the cost of attention onto the viewer, and mass producibility. Common indicators of AI slop include uncanny facial movements, overly smooth motion, and generic, unproven scripts.
Despite these risks, AI offers competitive advantages for social media creators by enabling rapid adaptation to trends and easy repurposing of content formats, such as converting horizontal videos for TikTok or Instagram Reels. The distinction between successful content and “slop” lies in the intent, craft, and ability to drive actual conversions rather than just filling digital feeds.
