EASD Congress highlights semaglutide benefits and AI diabetes screening

At the 62nd EASD Congress in Milan, several medical advancements and public health initiatives were highlighted. A major focus was the clinical profile of semaglutide, which has been recognized in the ESC 2026 Guidelines (recommendation 1A) for its ability to improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes and kidney disease. Data presented showed semaglutide reduces major cardiovascular events by 26%, non-fatal strokes by 39%, and composite renal risk by 24%, while improving functional capacity by 13%.

Research into early diagnosis was also prominent. A new AI model developed by Thymia and RMIT University can identify signs of type 2 diabetes by analyzing just 20 seconds of voice recordings, detecting changes in hoarseness and breath control. Additionally, the Dexcom State of Type 2 Report indicated that 89% of healthcare professionals believe continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) aids in assessing treatment adherence.

Regarding pregnancy safety, a metanalysis of over 43,000 women found no significant association between GLP-1 receptor agonist exposure and risks of preterm birth, fetal death, or pre-eclampsia. However, researchers noted a 31% frequency of early pregnancy loss in exposed women, though they cautioned that data limitations make definitive conclusions difficult.

On a policy level, the European Commission launched the first EU Screening Week to encourage early detection of cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol, aiming to mitigate the significant economic and health burden of heart disease in the EU.
