OpenAI develops AI‑powered portable smart speaker for the home

OpenAI is creating its first consumer‑hardware product, a screen‑less portable smart speaker designed to act as an AI companion in the home. The device will include a camera, microphones, motion sensors and mechanical elements that allow it to move on its own, giving it a sense of “life”. It will run an advanced version of ChatGPT’s voice model, GPT‑Live, enabling real‑time, two‑way conversation and quick information processing.

The speaker will learn users’ habits, access personal data such as email, and become increasingly proactive, anticipating needs and offering suggestions. It will also control smart‑home appliances, play media and respond to messages. A rechargeable battery lets the unit be carried from room to room. OpenAI plans to unveil the prototype in late 2026, with a market launch slated for 2027.

Apple has filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of misusing trade secrets acquired from former Apple designers hired for the project. OpenAI denies any infringement, saying the device differs significantly from Apple’s current offerings. The development places OpenAI in direct competition with established hardware players such as Apple, Amazon and Google, and has already affected market sentiment, triggering a short‑term drop in shares of audio‑equipment makers.
