AI voice cloning faces new regulatory safeguards under EU AI Act
Advancements in artificial intelligence now allow for the synthesis and cloning of human voices using only a few seconds of audio. While this technology offers significant opportunities for accessibility and the audiovisual industry, it also presents serious risks regarding identity theft, unauthorized appropriation, and impersonation.
To address these challenges, the European Union’s AI Act, specifically Article 50, establishes a regulatory framework focused on governance and transparency. The regulation promotes the use of explicit consent, traceability, and digital watermarking to ensure that technological innovation remains ethical and secure, protecting the identity and credibility of individuals.
