Ai Weiwei unveils ‘Mushrooms’ helmet installation in Sydney

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has unveiled a new large-scale public installation titled ‘Mushrooms’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney. The 40-meter-long work consists of 500 cast iron combat helmets arranged in ten uniform rows on a raised platform overlooking Sydney Harbour.

The installation serves as a meditation on war, peace, and human vulnerability. The artist noted that the title refers to the appearance of the helmets, the concept of growth in darkness, and the imagery of atomic mushrooms. The work was specifically inspired by the 2022 controversy surrounding the German government's decision to provide 5,000 protective helmets to Ukraine, a gesture that drew criticism from officials such as Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Visitors can walk through the installation, which is located on the Tallawoladah Law public green space. The museum has also launched an engagement program called ‘Say Your Peace,’ inviting the public to record video messages. The artwork is scheduled to be on display for seven months.
