Ai Weiwei criticizes art education for children

Artist Ai Weiwei has criticized traditional art education, arguing that attempting to correct children's mistakes destroys their creative potential. In an interview discussing his new book, “Über Zensur” (On Censorship), the 69-year-old artist stated that there are no mistakes in art, only moments where a deviation becomes art itself.

Weiwei suggested that teaching children to avoid errors in pursuit of a perfect result, such as an exact copy of a character like Mickey Mouse, actually trains them in self-censorship. He characterized the drive for perfection and correctness as “German thinking,” asserting that true art begins with a mistake rather than mere decoration.
