Ai Weiwei warns of privacy loss and AI censorship

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has raised concerns regarding the erosion of privacy and the rise of censorship in Western democracies. Speaking at the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Ai Weiwei addressed an audience of over 2,000 people during a discussion with Belgian cultural manager Chris Dercon of the Fondation Cartier.

During the event, which centered on his upcoming book, ‘Ai Weiwei on Censorship’, the artist warned that the loss of privacy threatens individuality, stating, “We no longer have privacy and when individuals have no privacy they are no longer individuals, but become the perfect product.” He specifically highlighted the use of artificial intelligence as a potential tool for subtle censorship.

Ai Weiwei also critiqued the tendency toward self-censorship in Western societies driven by fear of reprisals. He challenged the notion of absolute freedom of expression, arguing that authorities and states often establish a shared consensus that dictates what is considered acceptable or correct.
