AI world models advance robotics planning and biological research
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence are focusing on the development of “world models” to enhance understanding and predictive capabilities across different domains.
In robotics, researchers have proposed a JEPA-style bilinear world model that significantly accelerates planning. By using a bilinear parameterization to constrain latent dynamics, this model can reduce planning time by nearly three orders of magnitude while maintaining or improving control accuracy. This approach helps prevent representation collapse and allows for more efficient encoding of physical state variables.
In the field of biology, Microsoft Research has introduced Quine, a multimodal world model designed to analyze biological relationships across multiple scales. Unlike traditional methods that analyze datasets in isolation, Quine integrates diverse data types including genomics, proteins, chemistry, RNA, cellular states, and bioimaging. The system aims to predict how biological systems will respond to interventions, such as how a specific compound might alter a cell's state and subsequent outcomes, allowing researchers to simulate thousands of possibilities more rapidly.
