AI writing styles face scrutiny over repetitive linguistic patterns

Generative AI applications are facing scrutiny regarding their distinct linguistic and typographical patterns. Users on platforms such as LinkedIn, Reddit, and Instagram have noted an excessive use of the em dash in AI-generated text.

Beyond punctuation, observers have identified specific stylistic tendencies in AI writing, including the use of certain vocabulary like ‘load-bearing’ or ‘gated’ and repetitive sentence structures. There is also a noted tendency for AI to imbue inanimate objects or technical processes with human-like agency, such as describing a database join as ‘riding’ an index or code hunks as being ‘blends’ rather than being blended.
