Aicep Global Parques plans deforestation in Sines industrial zone

Aicep Global Parques, the manager of the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS), has launched a public consultation regarding a plan to deforest 347.62 hectares of land to accommodate new industrial and logistics facilities. The project, which is part of the ZILS Urbanization Plan, is currently undergoing an Environmental Impact Assessment and is open for public comment until November 12.

The operation will be implemented in four distinct phases to avoid clearing land before it is needed for construction. The phases involve clearing 66.38 hectares, 124.53 hectares, 77.63 hectares, and 79.09 hectares respectively. The environmental study indicates that the deforestation will affect 3,593 cork oaks, 3,373 of which are over one meter in height. The area also contains approximately 260 hectares of mixed pine and cork oak forests, along with eucalyptus and scrubland.

To mitigate the loss of vegetation and habitats, the promoter has proposed compensatory measures, including ecological reconversion and reforestation. The project has faced opposition from environmental associations, such as GEOTA, which advocate for preserving the montado habitat and seeking alternatives in already developed areas.
