Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games face housing and surveillance concerns

The upcoming 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are facing logistical and political challenges. To reduce costs, organizers are not building a traditional athletes' village. Instead, approximately 2,400 athletes will stay in modular wooden container housing or on cruise ships. This has raised concerns regarding living conditions, particularly for tall athletes, such as members of the South Korean men's basketball team, who may find the two-person container rooms too cramped for their physical size.

Additionally, North Korea is reportedly implementing strict surveillance measures for its participating athletes. According to sources, the North Korean State Intelligence Department has deployed monitors to oversee the delegation to prevent defections or ideological shifts while in Japan. Athletes have reportedly been required to sign loyalty oaths and provide identity guarantees from their families. While Japan typically restricts North Korean nationals due to sanctions, officials are considering exceptions for the athletes to allow for sports exchange.
