Latin American Communities Expand Environmental Protection and Reforestation Efforts

The Secretariat of Environment (SEDEMA) in Veracruz, Mexico, will increase protection, surveillance and conservation activities in the La Martinica Natural Protected Area after a supervision tour revealed human‑caused damage to trails, Laguna Encantada and the Eco‑Aula.

In the Sierra de San Miguelito, Mexico, volunteers and the Guardians of the Sierra organized a citizen‑led reforestation, planting roughly 1,000 native seedlings and planning bimonthly events for the next two months.

In Piedras Negras, Mexico, a “books for trees” campaign attracted 145 participants who exchanged 78 books for about 360 tree saplings, supporting community libraries and urban greening.

The Autonomous Regional Corporation of Magdalena (CORPAMAG) in Colombia held environmental‑prevention workshops in Nueva Granada and San Sebastián de Buenavista, focusing on forest‑fire risk, wildlife protection and water‑use during the El Niño‑driven dry season.

Finally, the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, launched the “Yo cuido los bosques, los páramos y el agua” campaign, coordinated by the municipal fire corps, the Azuay prefecture and local authorities, to train citizens and form brigades for forest‑fire prevention ahead of the high‑risk season.
