AIDA Cruises tests digital self-check-in with biometric technology

AIDA Cruises has introduced a digital self-check-in system to streamline the boarding process. Tested at the Cruise Terminal Hamburg-Steinwerder for the AIDAprima, the system utilizes twenty digital terminals to allow guests to check in independently.

Developed in collaboration with Lufthansa Industry Solutions AS GmbH over two years, the technology incorporates biometric facial recognition to verify identities against official travel documents. For security purposes, a current photo is taken of each guest and stored in the ship's system for the duration of the voyage.

The digital process also issues RFID-coded boarding passes, which function as cabin keys and onboard payment methods. While the system aims to reduce waiting times and increase flexibility, AIDA continues to offer traditional counter service and crew assistance for guests preferring personal interaction.
