Aida dos Santos wins Spain's National Essay Prize
Political scientist Aida dos Santos has been awarded the National Essay Prize of Spain for her work, ‘Hijas del hormigón: historias de clasismo, sexismo y violencia en las periferias españolas’. The prize includes a 30,000 euro award.
The jury praised the work for its “original, courageous, and enriching approach,” noting that it brings visibility to the experiences of women living and working in Spanish peripheries who sustain essential sectors of society and the economy. Through documented historical trajectories and individual testimonies, the essay analyzes the conditions of precariousness and inequality, exploring the intersection of racism, classism, violence, and sexism within contemporary mechanisms of social exclusion.
Born in Faro in 1992, dos Santos holds a degree in Political Science from the Complutense University of Madrid and works as a social research technician and data analyst. The book was published by the Spanish publisher Debate.
