AFL player Aiden O'Driscoll criticizes league over concussion support

Former Western Bulldogs draftee Aiden O'Driscoll has criticized the AFL for its lack of support following a devastating concussion injury. O'Driscoll, who was forced into medical retirement in 2024 after suffering eight micro brain bleeds and a fracture behind his ear, described the league's response as “an absolute joke.”

In a candid social media post, the 21-year-old detailed the severe physical and mental toll of the injury, including brain fog, dizziness, depression, nausea, and memory loss. He revealed that the trauma led to a period of intense mental health struggles, stating he was “so close to ending everything” before receiving support from family and friends.

O'Driscoll also highlighted a failed compensation battle, noting that his bid for a $600,000 severe-injury payment was rejected by both the AFL and the players’ association. He criticized the delay in mental health assistance, noting it took six weeks for the league to provide him with a psychologist during his most difficult period of grief.
