AI‑Designed Artificial Lens Restores Vision for 82‑Year‑Old at San Luigi Hospital

At the AOU San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital in Orbassone, Italy, surgeons performed a pioneering operation on an 82‑year‑old patient who had severe cataract and glaucoma in both eyes. Using artificial‑intelligence software, the team designed a custom intra‑ocular lens tailored to the patient’s complex ocular anatomy. Professor Raffaele Nuzzi, director of the university ophthalmology unit, led the procedure, which improved the patient’s vision from less than one‑tenth to eight‑tenths of normal acuity without the need for glasses.

The AI tool helped identify the optimal surgical plan and fabricate the personalized lens, overcoming challenges such as a tiny, highly hyperopic eye and extensive intra‑ocular scarring. The patient, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed gratitude for regaining functional binocular vision after years of visual impairment.
