AI‑Driven Zero‑Click Search Cuts Healthcare Website Traffic

Google’s rollout of AI Overviews and recent core updates has sharply increased zero‑click searches in the United States. Overall, 58‑65% of all Google queries now end without a click, and for queries that trigger an AI Overview the rate climbs to 80‑83%. When an AI Overview appears, the average click‑through to traditional organic results falls from about 1.76% to 0.61%, with the top‑ranked result losing more than half of its clicks.

Healthcare queries are especially vulnerable because patients often search for symptoms, conditions, medications and treatment options. Studies show that 77% of patients use a search engine before booking a medical appointment, making organic visibility critical for clinics. The decline in click traffic means fewer patients are reaching provider websites, even though search remains a primary channel for appointment‑driving leads.

Marketers are advised to adapt to the new search environment by strengthening local SEO, review strategies, and clear, authoritative content to retain visibility despite the zero‑click trend.
