Aiete International Peace Conference marks 15th anniversary

The Aiete International Peace Conference, held in San Sebastián, marks its 15th anniversary. In 2011, the conference brought together a broad spectrum of political parties from the Basque Country, Navarre, and the Northern Basque Country, alongside unions, business organizations, religious representatives, and civil society members.

Led by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and international mediators such as Brian Currin, the gathering aimed to transition away from violence toward resolving disagreements through dialogue and mutual understanding. While the conference was a decisive step that preceded the announcement of the end of ETA's violence, organizers noted that the cessation of violence and human rights violations could have been achieved sooner.
