Italy healthcare: Officials advocate for investment and infrastructure expansion
During the Salute Direzione Nord event in Milan, Italian health officials and regional leaders discussed the economic and social value of healthcare investment. Francesco Saverio Mennini of the Ministry of Health emphasized that investing in prevention, treatment, and early diagnosis—particularly for rare diseases—yields significant returns for both citizen health and the national GDP.
In Lombardy, officials highlighted the importance of using PNRR resources to transform infrastructure into integrated service models that utilize digitalization and multidisciplinary approaches. This includes addressing waiting lists and improving proximity to patients.
Significant infrastructure developments are also underway in Sesto San Giovanni, where the Città della Salute project has received an additional 300 million euros, bringing the total investment to 722.6 million euros. This hospital hub will house the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori and the Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta, aiming to integrate research, training, and clinical care.
Additionally, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved the reimbursement of eplontersen for treating hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN), offering a new therapeutic option for patients with this rare, progressive disease.
